Assessment of vaccination strategies against highly pathogenic avian influenza in China

Honglei SUN,Jinhua LIU

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 1, Issue 4,   Pages 277-281 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2014036

Abstract: Vaccination for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been implemented in China for a decade, however, the virus is still present in poultry. A series of recombinant vaccines, Re-1 to Re-7, have been developed and used, and Re-8 will also be used in clinical settings to prevent the prevailing flu strains. The question remains, when can China eradicate the disease? Here, we review the epidemiology of H5 HPAI along with the development, usage and problems of vaccines. Further suggestions for controlling the disease in China are provided.

Floating forest: A novel breakwater-windbreak structure against wind and wave hazards

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 5,   Pages 1111-1127 doi: 10.1007/s11709-021-0757-1

Abstract: A novel floating breakwater-windbreak structure (floating forest) has been designed for the protection of vulnerable coastal areas from extreme wind and wave loadings during storm conditions. The modular arch-shaped concrete structure is positioned perpendicularly to the direction of the prevailing wave and wind. The structure below the water surface acts as a porous breakwater with wave scattering capability. An array of tubular columns on the sloping deck of the breakwater act as an artificial forest-type windbreak. A feasibility study involving hydrodynamic and aerodynamic analyses has been performed, focusing on its capability in reducing wave heights and wind speeds in the lee side. The study shows that the proposed 1 km long floating forest is able to shelter a lee area that stretches up to 600 m, with 40%–60% wave energy reduction and 10%–80% peak wind speed reduction.

Talin and kindlin: the one-two punch in integrin activation

Feng Ye, Adam K. Snider, Mark H. Ginsberg

Frontiers of Medicine 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 6-16 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0317-3

Abstract:

Proper cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts mediated by integrin adhesion receptors are important for development, immune response, hemostasis and wound healing. Integrins pass trans-membrane signals bidirectionally through their regulated affinities for extracellular ligands and intracellular signaling molecules. Such bidirectional signaling by integrins is enabled by the conformational changes that are often linked among extracellular, transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. Here, we review how talin-integrin and kindlin-integrin interactions, in cooperation with talin-lipid and kindlin-lipid interactions, regulate integrin affinities and how the progress in these areas helps us understand integrin-related diseases.
